Birth of Charles de Calonne

Charles Alexandre de Calonne was born in Douai on 20 January 1734, the son of Louis de Calonne. As Louis XVI's chief financial minister, he proposed a programme of fiscal reform that was presented in 1787 to an Assembly of Notables, a council of prominent men selected by the king.
