Toussaint Louverture, the formerly enslaved commander, governor-general of Saint-Domingue and leading figure of its revolution, was born on the Bréda plantation at Haut-du-Cap, Saint-Domingue around 1743, the son of Hippolyte, an enslaved Allada man, and Pauline, an enslaved Aja woman.
