Birth of Marquis de Condorcet
Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat, marquis de Condorcet, the mathematician and philosopher who championed public education, abolition and equal political rights for women, was born in Ribemont on 17 September 1743. He belonged to a provincial noble family but was orphaned when he was young and educated by a clerical uncle.
