Jean-Jacques Duval d'Éprémesnil, a magistrate in the Parlement of Paris, a high court rather than a representative legislature, was born in Pondicherry on 5 December 1745. His opposition to royal reforms made him a prominent critic of the monarchy's ministers before 1789.
