Birth of Olympe de Gouges

Marie Gouze, known as Olympe de Gouges, the playwright and political writer who demanded equal citizenship for women and opposed slavery, was born in Montauban on 7 May 1748. Her baptismal record names Pierre Gouze, a butcher, and Anne-Olympe Mouisset as her parents; contemporaries also attributed her paternity to Jean-Jacques Lefranc de Pompignan, but this remains unproved.
